Love, not time, heals all wounds

Chris and Stef

In early 1998, Chris and Stefanie Spielman were living an envious life – Chris was an all-pro linebacker in the NFL, Stefanie had a successful career in broadcast journalism, and they had two small children, ready to add a third. It was during a self breast-exam that Stefanie noticed a lump in her breast. At the age of 30 and in otherwise perfect health, Stefanie was diagnosed with breast cancer. What is all too often a quiet, personal battle took center stage when Chris announced he was taking a leave of absence from the NFL to take care of his wife and family.

Chris went from being husband and father to caregiver, confidant, and head of the household as Stefanie focused on getting better. They both came to realize the importance of the caregiver and the challenges caregivers face every day.

Chris is inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame as Stefanie, their family, and Archie Griffin look on.

In 1999, Stefanie wanted to honor Chris for being her rock and created Stefanie’s Champions – an annual luncheon event designed to celebrate the caregivers in the lives of those living with cancer. Strong Hearts will allow Chris and Stefanie to fulfill Champions’ mission to recognize one of the most critical factors in surviving cancer – the loving, unwavering support of caregivers – by providing support and programs to help them along the journey.

With the passing of Stefanie, Strong Hearts is committed to bringing her vision to life. Her hard work and determination to make a difference over these last ten years will inspire all of us to fulfill her legacy and help cancer caregivers across the nation for many years to come. Won’t you join us?
