Putting our vision to work
We want to ensure every cancer caregiver, their loved one and their family has the help they need to fight cancer together, as well as continue with their lives after treatment has ended. Below are just a few of the programs planned as part of Strong Hearts’ offering.
Our dream is big. But so is the need.
One of the programs we envision to accomplish our goal will focus on family education, specifically helping children understand what is happening when a loved one is diagnosed as well as what can be expected during the course of their family member’s or friend’s treatment. Stefanie and Chris felt this need during their own experience. Before her death, Stefanie had written two books focusing on this subject and they are in the process of being finalized. Strong Hearts is seeking partners for publication and distribution of these books and future educational materials at this time.
Nobody plans to have cancer, so you better have a plan.
Another focus for Strong Hearts will be to help cancer caregivers find structure in the chaos that occurs after a cancer diagnosis. We hope to provide tools like the Strong Hearts Life Planner, a central location for medical materials, personal and professional numbers, information, organizational calendars and more. Also, we are looking for partners to help sponsor a Cancer Caregiver Concierge that will provide transportation, help with daily household needs, as well as be another pair of hands or wheels when needed.
Everyone needs a break
Many caregivers handle their journey alone. Sometimes, there is guilt associated with taking any time for themselves. “Why should I need a break? I don’t have cancer!” But the reality is that a caregiver needs just as much attention and support as the person going through treatment. Caregivers’ responsibilities often times double, which can result in their own illness or burnout. That’s why Strong Hearts is currently seeking to create a partnership with a national coffee shop to establish Cancer Caregiver Coffee Talk. One morning a week, caregivers across the country can take few minutes for them; enjoy a cup of coffee and conversation with other caregivers or maybe read a book and stop thinking about cancer for just a little while.
These are just a few of the initial programs we will focus on. There are so many more, but we need your help take the first step in helping cancer caregivers help the ones they love.
